“Migrating Cranes”

We see large flocks of cranes twice a year in our part of south west France; heading north then later returning south. It is always a wonderful sight and they are very noisy and talkative! Here I have tried to recreate two flying passed us.

Subjects: Pewter with acrylic, mother of pearl, gold leaf, silver leaf.

“Heron flying off”

Herons are majestic birds with a sculptured shape. Their long neck is retracted back into an S shape when flying.

“The Dance of the Stork”

Migrating storks also visit us, probably on their to Spain.

A younger crane taking off to join the flock.

“Courtship of Cranes”

Two cranes with eyes only for one another.

“African Hoopoe in flight 1”

Hoopoes are spectacular birds with the African and European species being very similar. Their plumage comes into display when they fly.

Subject: The bird is pewter with acrylic, gold leaf and resin;

Mount: Board with gold leaf

Frame: Wood with gold leaf

Size: 50 x 50 cm

Second of the pair of hoopoes. Again, pewter on board of gold leaf.

To highlight the metal work and feathers, I have not used acrylics but simply used gold leaf and silver leaf.

Mount (+sides): Copper with antiqued patina and middle section sealed with resin.

Size: 50 x 30 cm (sides 30mm)

On display in our house

“Grey Heron on sunrise flight”

Herons are magnificent and majestic birds. They are seen frequently along river banks and dams / lakes. When thoroughly airborne, they retract their necks into an S shape.

Subject: The heron is pewter with acrylic and resin. The legs are antique gold leaf.

Mount: Brass with patina and a gold leaf rising sun (60 x 30 cm) on a painted wooden mount

Size: 90 x 50 cm


“Herons in flight”

Pair of herons with their most distinctive profile in flight.

Subjects: Pewter with gold leaf on beaks and feet.

Mount: Brass with antique patina

Size: 110 x 45 cm


“Heron: Set for take off”

These birds are really magnificent and very graceful in flight. Its body is in relief and wing tips curled, setting off.

Subject: Pewter with gold leaf. The rest of the bird is only sealed to allow the metal work to be easily visible and realistic.

Mount: This is aluminium with coloured resin (hence the shine).

“Feathers of Icarus”

Feathers are of pewter with patina, acrylic, gold leaf and resin. Mount is of wood inset and copper with patina and sides are copper.
